Stark Varg EX vs Varg SM: Which One Is Right for You?

The Stark Varg has rewritten what an electric motorcycle can do, and it now comes in two street-legal flavors: the Varg EX for enduro and trail, and the Varg SM for supermoto and street. Both share the same 80 hp heart, the same battery and the same app-driven tech, so the real question is simple: where are you going to ride?

As an authorized Stark Future dealer in Jacksonville, we get this question all the time. Here's how the two bikes compare, using Stark's own published specs.

What the EX and SM Have in Common

Under the bodywork, these bikes are close siblings. According to Stark Future, both get:

  • 60 or 80 hp power configurations, with a 360V carbon fiber sleeve motor
  • 7.2 kWh battery with Stark's magnesium "Flying V" case
  • 3.3 kW charger included, rated at about 3.5 hours on 120V or 2 hours on 240V
  • KYB suspension front and rear, with 303 mm of rear wheel travel
  • Brembo brakes and an RK 520 gold chain drive
  • Arkenstone waterproof Android phone as the dashboard, with adjustable power curves and regenerative braking, ride stats, navigation and over-the-air updates
  • Crawl mode, forward and reverse, for tight turns, parking and loading
  • Full US homologation, so both can be titled and plated for the road
  • 2-year warranty

No clutch, no gears, no oil changes, no air filters. Both bikes give you instant torque and quiet riding, which keeps your neighbors and your trail access happy.

Stark Varg EX: Built for Trails and Enduro

The Varg EX is Stark's enduro machine, and it's set up to go anywhere a dirt bike can go and then ride home on the pavement.

Key EX specs (Stark Future):

  • Weight: 264 lb
  • Torque: 764 ft-lb at the rear wheel
  • Tires: 90/90-21 front, 140/80-18 rear
  • Front suspension: 48 mm KYB closed cartridge fork, 300 mm travel
  • Brakes: 2-piston caliper with 260 mm front disc, 1-piston caliper with 220 mm rear disc
  • Frame: chromoly steel
  • Lighting: 4,000-lumen North Star LED headlight
  • Riding time: up to 6 hours of trail riding, depending on rider and terrain

Stark's own range testing shows how much riding style matters. In enduro conditions, they list about 2 hours 18 minutes for an amateur rider and over 4 hours at a beginner pace. On hard-packed MX terrain, an amateur gets about 1 hour 6 minutes.

The EX is for you if: you ride singletrack, woods, sand or hard enduro, you want the 21/18 dirt wheel setup and long-travel suspension, and you like the idea of riding legally on the road between trailheads.

Stark Varg SM: Built for Street and Supermoto

The Varg SM takes the same platform and turns it into a road-focused supermoto. Stark calls it a "wheelie machine," and the setup backs that up.

Key SM specs (Stark Future):

  • Tires: 120/70-17 front, 140/70-17 rear on 17" wheels
  • Front brake: radially mounted 4-piston Brembo caliper with a 320 mm disc
  • Rear brake: 1-piston caliper with 220 mm disc
  • Front suspension: 48 mm KYB closed cartridge fork, 290 mm travel, retuned for supermoto
  • Range: 73 miles of mixed urban riding, 49 miles at highway speeds
  • Battery: 7.2 kWh, 420V
  • Extras: parental PIN power lock, handlebar key lock, in-app digital lock and built-in GPS tracking

The bigger front brake and 17" street rubber are the big story here. You get far more stopping power and grip on asphalt, plus a chassis with supermoto-specific offset, spring rates and valving.

The SM is for you if: most of your miles are on pavement, you want a quick and quiet commuter or canyon bike, you're interested in track days or supermoto racing, or you want a powerful street bike with security features built in.

Which Varg Should You Choose?

Ask yourself one question: dirt or pavement?

  • Mostly trails, woods, sand and enduro loops? Go EX.
  • Mostly streets, commuting and track days? Go SM.
  • Split down the middle? The EX is the more versatile pick, since you can ride it on the road and still tackle real off-road terrain. The SM will feel much sharper on asphalt but is not built for rough trails.
