Navigating the World of Electric Bikes: Understanding the Differences Between Class 1, 2, and 3

There are three types of electric bikes, each with its own set of rules and regulations.

Class 1 e-bikes, also known as pedal-assist e-bikes, are equipped with a motor that assists the rider while pedaling. Once the rider reaches 20 miles per hour, the motor must stop assisting. These bicycles are permitted on bike paths and trails.

Class 2 e-bikes, also known as throttle-assist e-bikes, are equipped with a motor that can propel the bike without the rider pedaling. Once the rider reaches 20 miles per hour, the motor must stop assisting. These bikes are permitted on bike paths and trails as well.

Class 3 e-bikes, also known as speed pedelec e-bikes, are equipped with a motor that assists the rider while pedaling. The motor has a top speed of 28 miles per hour. These bikes are typically not permitted on bike paths or trails and are only intended for road use.

It's worth noting that e-bike regulations vary by location, so it's critical to check local laws before purchasing and operating an e-bike.
